Beaufort Scoring:
The Beaufort Scale is a system used to estimate and report wind speeds. It was originally developed by Sir Francis Beaufort, a British admiral, in the early 19th century. The scale is based on visual observations of the effects of the wind on the sea surface or land features, providing a standardised way to describe wind intensity.
If climate change were a windspeed, your score determines how much your organisation could withstand.
1-3 (3-10%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 0 – You are able to withstand a calm air
4-6 (13-20%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 1 – You are able to withstand light air
7-9 (23-30%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 2 – You are able to withstand a light breeze
10-12 (33-40%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 3 – You are able to withstand a gentle breeze
13-15 (43-50%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 4 – You are able to withstand a moderate breeze
16-17 (53-56%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 5 – You are able to withstand a fresh breeze
18-19 (59-63%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 6 – You are able to withstand a strong breeze
20-21 (66-70%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 7 – You are able to withstand a high wind/moderate gale
22-23 (73-76%)- Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 8 – You are able to withstand a gale
24-25 (79-83%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 9 – You are able to withstand a strong / severe gale
26-27 (86-89%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 10 – You are able to withstand a storm
28-29 (93-96%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 11 – You are able to withstand a violent storm
30 (100%) – Equivalent to Beaufort Scale 12 – You are able to withstand a hurricane
Some tips to increase your organisational resilience is:
- Undertake thorough climate risk assessments to identify potential vulnerabilities and exposures within your organisation. Understand how climate change might affect your operations, supply chains, and infrastructure.
- Create a comprehensive climate resilience plan that outlines specific actions to mitigate risks and adapt to changing conditions. This plan should involve all relevant departments and stakeholders within the organisation.
- Integrate sustainable and environmentally friendly practices into daily operations. This includes reducing energy consumption, optimising waste management and encouraging more environmentally friendly travel options, such as a cycle-to-work scheme.
- Educate employees on climate change impacts and resilience strategies. This awareness can lead to more informed decision-making and encourage sustainable practices within the organisation.
- Engage with local communities, governments, and other stakeholders to share information and collaborate on climate resilience initiatives.
- Climate change is dynamic, and its impacts can evolve. Regularly review and update climate resilience strategies to ensure they remain effective in the face of changing circumstances.
